Getting Temporary Work in Europe
If you plan to work legally in any European country, you will need to make arrangements based on your citizenship. If you are a non-EU national, you will need to get a work permit or a visa in advance. Expect to do a lot of paperwork and conquer a lot of red tape to obtain the necessary permits from the consulate of your own country. You'll also be needing letters from your future employers as proof of your intent. Before you leave, make sure you've also contacted the embassy or consulate of the country that you plan to work in because employment regulations change frequently. If you are a Commonwealth citizen between the ages of 17 and 27, you can get a working holiday visa for Britain which is...
TEFL - Employed by a School Vs Teaching Private...
The two main ways of making money by teaching English overseas is either to be employed by a school or by teaching private lessons. Schools are often able to arrange a work visa for you meaning you can stay longer in the country without having to leave or go on a visa run (leaving the country and re-entering thereby renewing your "tourist" visa), they also provide some stability in regards to income coming in and many will provide accommodation for you. Most that do not will help you find accommodation that you need locally. Some although not all also offer training before you start and some even have lesson plans already set out. Private lessons can generally make you more money, but can't provide...
Post Tefl - Winter Time in Madrid
Madrid, and Spain especially, is known for its summer heat. Its intensity is overwhelming and all consuming but what happens in the winter months? Does Madrid have a winter or is it always sunny? I have been in Madrid for 5 months. I studied for my Spain TEFL certificate in August where the weather was hideously hot. Now that its December I can assure you that Madrid does get cold. And quickly! There is no easing into this climate change, it happens very suddenly. October and November are slightly chilly, in the sense that you might need a jacket at night. One morning I woke up and I was shivering. What was this all about? This isn't what I signed up for when I decided to come to Spain and study for...
This article is about the things you have to consider before moving abroad for TEFL-ing. Whether you are moving abroad to study for a TEFL or already have your TEFL certificate, you'll find that your check list of "must haves" is very similar. I moved to Madrid, Spain in August 2009 and was really grateful of the advice I received before heading out but I learnt so much along the way. Here is a comprehensive list of items that you must make sure you have before heading out to pastures unknown. Having these items reduces stress, trust me! Get it and go! First of all, take about 4 photocopies of your passport. You'll need copies to obtain documentation like your social security number and your NIE...
Attending an interview for a teaching job in the TEFL market is often a shock to graduates who have recently completed their TEFL certificate course. In many countries where the market is very buoyant, you can often wonder when the interview is going to start and they are already offering you hours. This was certainly the case in Madrid a couple of years ago. There was such a need for English teachers that you would often get phone calls offering your jobs without actually attending an interview. Whilst this was great, it also meant it was hard to control the quality in the market. Since the global economic crises, this has certainly changed. For teaching English in Madrid and most other European...

"body"> Use the Soccer World Cup in Germany as an English Language Teaching Tool? No, I'm not kidding. Using popular events like the soccer world cup in Germany to teach English is in fact, practical. The learners' Affective Filter (Krashen and Terrell, 1983) is so low using events like these to teach English, "a cockroach could leap over it". Can you imagine the reactions of my learners when I announced, "For English class everybody has to watch the world cup matches"? "That's great!" "Teacher, you're the best!" "Oh man, we've never had an English assignment like that before!" Although not a huge soccer fan myself, I did think it would be interesting to see matches between teams you know never get...

TEFL Visits - Stonehenge Mysteries
Not far from where I teach is a World Heritage site - Stonehenge. Most people who visit us from overseas have heard of it, seen pictures, and are keen to visit. Actually it's a pile of stones in the middle of a field a few miles from Salisbury. The stones were erected a few thousand years ago by people with no diggers, cranes or tractors, using stones dragged from South Wales, a couple of hundred miles or more to the west. The thing about the pile of stones is their mystery - the fact that we really don't know anything about them at all. Sure, they are very old, and they are positioned in a way that suggests our ancestors were excellent astronomers, but at the end of the day they are a mysterious...
Where Should I Travel?
A person's home country can get boring after a while, and traveling has been popular since the invention of cheap airfares. If you are looking to explore an exotic area like Hawaii, you might consider a Kauai vacation home, or if going further overseas sounds like your idea of a good time, you could find appropriate Poipu vacation rentals in the country of your choice. People are often hesitant to travel overseas due to worries about exorbitant costs, terrorism on the flight and dangers of an unknown country, but these fears are largely unfounded. You might consider going to a disadvantaged country in Africa. Behind Antarctica it is probably the least popular continent for travelers to visit, yet a...

You have a business or a book that you want to promote. And you only have limited time to promote this business or book because, let's face it, you need to be making money, not spending it. And you're also a good citizen of the world - you'd love to help heal the earth if only there were 48 hours in a day. Are the goals of finding time to promote/market your business/book and doing good deeds mutually exclusive? Or can these two goals be combined to produce a powerful marketing strategy that helps promote your brand and heal the earth at the same time? Let's look at how this might work: Case study 1: Your brick-and-mortar business is an exercise gym for women (no being intimidated by those burly men...

If you decide to embark on the quest of learning a new language you might be surprised to find that you first need to learn how to learn a new language. The truth is you need to create a system of learning for yourself because and the speed at which you learn will completely rely on how affective the learning...
Why English is Not That Easy to Learn
English is either the first or second (with the Chinese) most-used language in the world today for many reasons. Many schools teaching English as a second language (ESL) flourish in many areas for the non-English who wish to learn it. Part of the normal curriculum are vocabulary quizzes on English words that get more complicated as the lessons continue, especially with the countless exceptions to the rules and different regulations that apply to syntax, spelling, figures of speech and many other items specific to the language. And sometimes the rules get somewhat contradictory. There was a joke once upon a time on what kind of animal is a ghoce. Nobody knew. Then the correct answer given was fish...

If you are in any way scared or horrified of grammar, then do make sure that your TEFL course has grammar inputs. My TEFL course had pre-course grammar activities to complete which served me very well. From Day One you are introduced to grammar and you to learn to love it...ok, that might be an exaggeration but you...

Unfortunately, today many people around the world are learning English as a Second Language but know little about genuine American culture. I say genuine to differentiate core culture shared by all Americans from Pop culture which is temporarily held to by the generation coming into adulthood. These language students are culturally illiterate about America. Cultural literacy means knowing about your own society, not just its history and traditions but everything about its foundation including government, economics and religion. It is to all of our benefit to know and teach our history and traditions to our children so that our culture is not lost. This is a common practice done in most countries...

How Is Language Learnt?
How is language learnt? In general, one of the most extraordinary features of human beings is language acquisition. When we say language acquisition, that is mean either the first language acquisition or the second language acquisition. In this domain, we should distinguish between the first language and the second language. The first language which acquires by a very young child (mother tongue), the second language which acquires by older learners, and it includes any language which learners acquire except their first language (mother tongue). In this paper I will illustrate the main point views in language acquisition; also I will talk about my experience in learning English language...
Difficulties With the Present Continuous Tense
People who learn English as a second language have problems mastering the tenses. While the Present Perfect tense poses challenge at a cognitive level, the Present Continuous poses challenge in restraining them from over use. Asian learners, especially, Indian, use this tense left, right and center. I am coming out from the shopping mall, sir, I am meeting this man who is asking for money yesterday. It is not difficult and it does not take much time either to understand the tense, but it does take some practice, a guided practice, to master it. The primary usage of this tense is to speak about what is happening at the time of speaking-that is the 'now' of the speaker. I am reading this article. Are...
If your from an English speaking background and you have a website, quite likely it is English only. But there are many reasons to publish your website content in other languages as well. 1. You probably overestimate how many people understand English: Good luck to find somebody who speaks English in a small town in France! In fact, only about 5% of the worlds population speak English as their first language. If you add English as second language speakers (people who learned English in school), you will get around 15% of the worlds population. So there is a huge audience you miss out when publishing in English only. 2. Even if many people know English as a second language, they probably feel more...

To go through a company or not: that is the question, whether it's better to throw on a rucksack and go it alone or book through a company! The tricky thing is there are no easy answers; rather it's a matter of taste and a question of what you want to do with your trip. First of all it's important to make sure that any company you consider is a responsible travel company that has at its heart a commitment to ethical travel. It's important to build a sustainable form of travel that can benefit everyone. Such is the bad press that mainstream tourism gets; often many companies get tarred with the same brush. In fact there are many out there who act responsibly and have a really positive contribution to...

Teaching Jobs Abroad and Police Clearance...
Police clearance certificates are as important to international teachers as their passports. Why? Without a police clearance certificate many countries will not allow teachers to work with children. The clearance certificate goes by many different names; what you’re looking for is an official document that records any convictions on your criminal record. Regardless of whether you have any convictions or not, you will be required to produce official evidence that your record is clear. If you record is not clear you may still be able to teach abroad, but you will need to find out which countries will grant you a work permit with the convictions you have. More rigorous background checks for foreign...
When you are struggling to make ends meet a radical change in your life is called for. It is a fact that teachers are not well paid, but international teachers working in international schools receive good salaries and most positions come with an expatriate benefits package. An expatriate package for an international teacher can include a yearly flight home, housing, utility contribution, health insurance (with pre-existing conditions covered), retirement contribution, contract completion bonus, and more. All of this adds up to money you do not have to spend from your salary. Currently I save fifty percent of my salary without breaking a sweat or doing without the things I love. I know I save half...
Beware Of Girls Who Ask You To Go Camping!
For all those of you contemplating marriage here is some timely advice. Go camping! And if you can manage it, see if you can get it to rain heavily, take a tent that leaks, and particularly make sure you take some kids along with you as well. Years ago in another life, I was teaching overseas a University Girls Class in English as a second language and we had to come up with topics that would get the class fired up and interested in speaking so much so that they wanted to be understood so that they attached a lot of intensity to communicating. (As an aside I had a mad English (well Manchester is in England) friend who was so aggrieved that his contract was not being extended as his students had...
CELTA is the "Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults". It is now undeniably the most widely recognized teaching qualification internationally and equally enables you to get a job teaching children although it is geared toward adult learning. While it is possible to get a decent job without a CELTA I would highly recommended you get one if you are planning on teaching overseas. It is administrated by Cambridge University and is an intensive 4 week course which can also be done part time. Apart from the name value of the qualification which shows you know what you are doing you will also receive at least 6 hours supervised teaching with genuine English language students at least two...
You need to teach overseas! Pick a country, any country, and there will be at least one international school there. International Schools offer private education for expatriate's children worldwide. And, while most of the parents have to pay school fees, one of the conditions nearly always included in the contracts of international teachers is free education for the teachers' children. There are over 4000 international schools worldwide, all requiring teachers to staff them, many of them offering excellent quality private education. Picking a school that suits both your children's needs and yours can be challenging, but it is possible. In a recent interview I conducted with international teachers...

Even better, imagine a parent-teacher conference where the parents respect you and your profession and, your professional development is of concern to the school's administration. These are the kind of benefits I have reaped from my move into an international teaching career. Prior to securing my position as an international teacher in Thailand, I worked for more than three years in the United Kingdom. While I enjoyed my time there and learned a lot from my colleagues, there were parts of the job I...

Using Realia in the Classroom
is Realia? If you're thinking the word 'realia' sounds vaguely Latin, then you'd be correct. In the TEFL classroom, the word realia means using real items found in everyday life as an aid to teaching English. Using realia helps to make English lessons memorable by creating a link between the objects and the word or phrase they represent. So how and why should teachers use realia in the classroom? The Advantages of Using Realia As English teachers, the use of realia is only limited by your imagination. It is possible to use realia to teach almost any subject. Using realia stimulates the mind, and is one way of encouraging creativity by involving the senses. Realia saves time, as recognition of an...
